Ten Reasons to Sew: New Listings in GoofingOff Sewing

It’s been a while since me last post and I do apologize for my absence. My upcoming trip to Haiti has my head swimming. Lots of things going on like a fundraiser this week and a breast cancer 5K in 2 weeks after that. Oh, and it’s my birthday today. Happy Birthday to me! Phew!

The costume pattern sale going strong. The sale is in it’s 5th year and patterns are going fast but there is still a selection to pick from.  The shop is growing with over 1000 items now but there’s always room for more so here’s ten of the latest listings.

Love the Asian influence jacket.

This dress is fabulous. Very flattering. Lots of variations to make this dress special. There is a link, too, to guide as you sew.

I love the neckline interest.

Hope you enjoyed my birthday present to you.

My Mission Trip to Haiti: Making the Dream Come True

I didn’t realize what a big undertaking going on a mission trip would be. Our group is made up of nurses from Maine Medical Hospital and two nurses from Florida. I’m one of the two from Florida. The distance adds a challenge to getting things ready and fundraising. Instead of 12 helping hands there are 10 and 2. Thank God for friends and family. Things like attending the fundraiser in Portland, Maine is out. It sounds like it will be a good time, too. It will be on November 15 at 12:00 PM at the Flask Lounge…..and I won’t be there, which means I need to do other things to keep up my end. It does mean if you are up that way…GO! Click Here for more information: HERE

New Listings in GoofingOff Sewing: Be Still My Rockabilly Heart!

It’s mid summer and incredibly hot in this part of the world. Summer in north Florida is like this: hot in the morning, rain in the afternoon, hot in the evening. Sometimes we are lucky to get a breeze..and when we do I love to stand in it and savor it. The next best thing is a fan on the front porch blowing while I sit in the front porch swing.  There are times I want to stay outside sans A/C, especially if I am working in the yard. Today darling hubby put up a fan above the swing (had one that died 2 years ago…fan, not the hubby) after I bought a new one. Hooray! Maybe I will sit in the swing and let the fan blow on me (a little, not gale force) during our afternoon shower.

Meanwhile, back at GoofingOff Sewing, there’s some new patterns just listed. Some, like the Rockabilly Summer Tops, are perfect for summer…as in now…others good for fall or holiday sewing. Either way, each one has its own charm.

Cocktails, Anyone? Cocktail Dress Patterns at GoofingOff Sewing

What is it about a  cocktail dress that makes a woman feel sexy? Is it the silky fabric that clings in the right places….that turns a walk into an event to observe…the little extra wriggle in the walk?  That’s the go to dress for date night or a friend’s wedding. From the LBD to the Lady in Red they add something special to the night…

Here’s a few dress patterns to make that special cocktail dress.

Vogue 1895 by Designers Tom and Linda Platt. Note the sweetheart neckline.

Simplicity 8841 with fitted bodice and spaghetti straps from Jessica McClintock

Vogue 8149 Strapless with fitted bodice….

Butterick 5541 Draped dress with a sleek, sexy silhouette.

Butterick 3514 Sleek silhouette with a slit to show “just a little bit.”

McCall’s 5770 from the early 1960’s with fitted bodice and flared skirt.

Advance 8728 from the 1950’s. The trapeze dress, first designed by Yves  St. Laurent (who else?).   Fitted at the shoulders, widening at the hips. Proper cocktail length somewhere around the knees.

Do I have one in my closet? Really? At least one, in black, close fitting to wear on special occasions, like date night or talking to the tax man….of course.

Mid Week Rummage: The Sunshine Look

Summer fashions a la 1964.

Needle and Yarn Magazine, Volume 1, Number 3

Simple dresses were sleeveless or with raglan sleeves. Princess lines and back zippers. The full skirts of the 50’s and early 60’s are replaced with straight skirts for dress, a-line for a casual look.  Pants are still straight legged and shorts are starting to get shorter. Shoes had pointy toes….the chunky look had yet to make its debut.  Easy to Make/Easy to wear drawstring dresses are in order for a sweet mother-daughter look.

These patterns were available for 50 cents through mail order.

Simplicity 7534 Misses’ Mini Dress in size 16, Bust 38 inches from 1968….COMPLETE

It was a very rainy morning, my day off sandwiched between work days….Lots to do but never too much that I can’t list a few patterns. The rain inspired me to make soup…2 pots (tonight and later this week), get laundry done (just have to iron my scrubs…yes, iron..with my 1950’s old fashioned iron), and pack weekend purchases. Now it’s coffee time and a chance to show off the latest listings.

Vintage Vogue 7734 Misses’ Jacket, Skirt, and Pants in size 14-18 UNCUT OK, I really like this jacket. I could wrap up in it and stay warm by the fire. Love it.

Simplicity 9365 Misses’ Blouses for Knit Fabrics from 1971 in size 16, Bust 38. Partially UNCUT
So I was in love with the hairdos on this pattern back in the day. I tried to get my hair to be like view 2….but that’s where my hair gets frizzy…like stick-your-finger-in-a-light-socket frizzy.
