GoofingOff’s Friday Freebie

Today’s Friday Freebie is a day late but awesome just the same. It is a flower wreath by Jacquelynne Steves. The design is suitable for embroidery, applique, needlepoint, or punch embroidery. It can be done in pastels for springs, orange, brown, and yellow for fall, or silver (or gold) with red berries for the holidays.

Time Traveling with GoofingOff Sewing to 1943

Sometimes I wish I could time travel. There are certain eras that interest me more than others.

The war years….the 1940’s (a little earlier for folks across “the pond”) is one of my favorites. I like the Hollywood version, seeing Abbot and Costello on the silver screen and hearing the Andrew Sisters singing The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B on the radio……..

Sewing Pattern Simplicity 1777 Misses Dress 1943 design Uncut Complete

and wearing a dress like Simplicity 1777. Skirts were a bit shorter during the war (rationing) and women were showing some leg.

Silk stockings were in short supply (silk was used for parachutes) so I would have to draw a line down the back of my legs it would look like I was wearing seamed stockings.

Of course I would be sporting a Victory Roll hairdo. The hair styles were pulled away from the face. The Veronica Lake Peek-a-boo hairdo didn’t work well with women on the assembly lines.

And my shoes would have to be sturdy shoes…something to wear while I walked everywhere….gas rationing, but a little heel wouldn’t hurt.

I think I’d wear the alligator leather shoes at the top of the ad.

But, then again, I’d probably be a nurse, maybe an Army nurse.

I wonder if sometime in the future someone will think “oh, the 2010’s was my favorite era. I just love the clothes.”

One never knows……

I think this dress would be wonderful for a summer date night or wedding….and the lining is a great idea, Angela.

Sit and Sew at the Suwannee Valley Quilt Shop

Made by Karen Brake from “Skinny Quilts for All Seasons”

Happy Thursday!

Yesterday I took a trip to one of my favorite sewing/quilt shops for supplies (Yes, I needed more fabric….stop laughing). I spent quite a while just walking around…until I realized I was getting lost in the fabric. Ever do that? I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Anyway, while checking out I noticed this adorable quilt hanging on the wall. One of our local quilters, Karen Brake, made this lovely and is going to teach others to do the same.

I don’t know if anyone remembers but a few months ago I sat in at the monthly Sit and Sew. It was wonderful. I could sew for hours, get tips, have lunch with good company, and not be disturbed by the phone, dogs (please walk me, whine, whine), hubby, or something on the stove (Babe, are you cooking something? Oops). I watched Karen as she started the table runner and was amazed by her work. She is also quite knowledgeable and taught me how to do French seams on the pillowcases I was making. Mais oui!

If anyone lives in this area….as in North Florida…..stop by for the Sit and Sew. The next one is August 22 at 10am. I won’t be there (working….got patients to care for) but Karen will be. You can make the table runner if you want to or just take advantage of the time away from the house and do anything. I worked on pillowcases and made a strip quilt…..it was good to have people there who had experience so I could ask questions.

Besides, time with the girls is always good.
More about what I bought and what I am making (a baby quilt) later.
Enjoy the day. Pack it full of good stuff. Savor every moment. It only comes around once.

Where the Magic Happens

“So, this is where the magic happens” my friend said when she came to my house….only I don’t feel like a magician. My name is Eileen and I color outside of the lines, or want to more than I do. I live and work very conservatively that I feel like I blend into the woodwork. Disappear until no one knows I am here. The ultimate legal beagle that never breaks the rules because I did long ago and didn’t like the consequences.

Why I blog

Recently I was asked why I blog. I blog to be heard. To announce “Here I am” to people around the world because I feel foolish speaking above a whisper to those I meet or know especially if the group is larger than two.

I blog to connect with people who love to sew, who love to create, who love to read, who love vintage, people like me, and maybe they might find something I found that they love.

Goofing Off Sewing Supplies

I opened a shop on Etsy, GoofingOff Sewing, after finding a bag of vintage, 1960’s sewing patterns at a yard sale. I looked over each pattern, amazed at the condition, surprised they were complete, and ready to become fabulous clothing. I thought about the first time I sewed, how magical it seemed as the fabric took shape and became a dress, and how I wanted to wear it forever. I knew then I wanted to share that magical feeling with others and could do so by supplying the materials.  The world of sewing pattern sellers is crowded, though, so I blog to set myself apart, to show off my items, to give ideas to customers so they can feel the magic, too.

Coat made by a customer using 1960’s Simplicity 4738. The pattern was from that first bag I found at the yard sale. I am so proud she sent me a picture of the coat. It is marvelous.

My Goal

I have been blogging for a few years but still have yet to develop a following. I am awed by writers who have huge followings and dozens of comments. I feel honored just to have people read what I have written, honored they took the time, their precious time, to read my thoughts or ideas. My goal is to build my audience by producing relevant posts that crafty folks, sewers and needle artists, can use to bring their ideas to life.

Sewing Roll by Jennie at JennieStitched

Rain again…lots of rain. We’re getting what California needs. Seems there is a disturbance in the Gulf, a stalled disturbance, with lots of rain. Hopefully it won’t organize and become a named storm. So what does that mean, you might ask? It means I keep my happy tush at home and get some things done…like laundry, cook a batch of chili, pack Etsy purchases (thank you), and list the wonderful costume patterns I found while thrifting at my favorite shops yesterday. After all, the annual Costume Sewing Pattern Sale is less than a month away. This is the 5th year now and it’s hard to keep patterns in the shop for the sale. It starts Septmber 1st and lasts through the month of September so mark your calendars. I’ll be posting more about it as we get closer to the sale.

In the meantime…..

The holidays are approaching like they do every year and every year I try to do too much….make gifts, bake cookies, cook for a crowd….I’m sure y’all go through the same thing. Well, I found this great looking sewing roll by Jenny at Jenny Stitched. She made this roll for a friend and posted the tutorial. It is worth a look-see and do. Click HERE to go to her tutorial (or click on the picture. She did a fine job and I want to show her work off).

I will post more easy-to-make gifts every week so we (yes, me, too) aren’t pulling our hair out trying to get things done at the last minute. I paid too much for this ‘do to pull it out…and I want to sip wine with friends. Maybe I host a cookie bake AND sip wine. Hmmm….

c
Jennie’s Sewing Roll opened with all the goodies inside.

Yippee! It looks like the rain is letting up a little…maybe the hubby won’t have to build a boat after all. No ark, the dogs are fixed….and so is the cat. The only thing that would breed would be mosquitoes…got enough of those already.

Until next time…Sew On!

New Listings in GoofingOff Sewing: Be Still My Rockabilly Heart!

It’s mid summer and incredibly hot in this part of the world. Summer in north Florida is like this: hot in the morning, rain in the afternoon, hot in the evening. Sometimes we are lucky to get a breeze..and when we do I love to stand in it and savor it. The next best thing is a fan on the front porch blowing while I sit in the front porch swing.  There are times I want to stay outside sans A/C, especially if I am working in the yard. Today darling hubby put up a fan above the swing (had one that died 2 years ago…fan, not the hubby) after I bought a new one. Hooray! Maybe I will sit in the swing and let the fan blow on me (a little, not gale force) during our afternoon shower.

Meanwhile, back at GoofingOff Sewing, there’s some new patterns just listed. Some, like the Rockabilly Summer Tops, are perfect for summer…as in now…others good for fall or holiday sewing. Either way, each one has its own charm.
